Obesity Q & A

What is obesity?

Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. Your body mass index is an indicator of your body weight, including body fat, in proportion to your height. You can determine your BMI by multiplying your body weight, in pounds, by 703. Next, divide that number by your height in inches, and finally, divide by your height in inches once again.

What are the drawbacks of obesity?

Obesity may increase your risk of several physical and mental health challenges, including:

  • Fatigue
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Other chronic diseases
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Substance use disorder
  • Low self-esteem

Obesity often results from combinations of factors, including lifestyle habits, genetics, hormone imbalances, medical conditions, or mental health challenges.

Carrying excess body weight can dramatically reduce your quality of life. The good news is that with the right treatment plan in place, you can achieve and maintain your goal weight for a lifetime.

How is obesity treated?

At My Wellness Psychiatry, Diana meets with you to discuss your medical history, mental health, and goal weight. She uses various methods to help you overcome obesity, including:

Nutrition and exercise counseling

Diana takes a holistic approach to mental health and obesity treatment, counseling you on ways to maximize your diet and exercise habits.

Medications

Taking medications can aid in weight loss or reduce symptoms of mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, that may contribute to obesity.

Psychotherapy

Diana offers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other forms of psychotherapy to help you overcome mental health challenges and alter your thought and behavior patterns. Making a few simple changes can help you eat fewer calories, get more exercise, sleep better, and enjoy life to its fullest.

To help, Diana tailors your plan to meet your specific needs.

Which obesity treatment is best for me?

Diana personalizes an obesity treatment plan that accounts for your lifestyle, medications, the underlying cause of obesity, treatment preferences, and desired results. She works with you to develop the most effective plan based on your individualized needs.
